First Day of Fieldwork Lima to Nazca
- On the way to Ica. Passengers about to board local transport with possessions n their backs and carrying more. Typical scene I would discover as we travelled
- A fairground ride in Ica and market stalls beyond
- Near Ica. Seriously big sand dunes
- Huacachina Oasis, Ica, almost surrounded by sand dunes
- Huacachina Oasis below the sand dunes. Looks like they will overwhelm the Oasis!
- Huacachina Oasis - the pool, with sand dunes beyond
- Huacachina Oasis - note the dunes towering behind
- Street photographers at the Oasis. Thy process black and white prints on the spot!
- Huacachina Oasis - a pleasant little piazza
- Leaving Ica on the Pan-American highway
- Palpa street
- Palpa street as we drove through
- Leaving Palpa
- To our left we could see the mountains - soon we'd be among them!
- Filling up along the road between Palpa and Nazca
- A rather odd stand-out bit of geology. I have no information....
- A last view of the sand dunes as we sped along the highway
- Beyond Ica. Even though there aren't sand-dunes here it was essentially a stony desert.
- The main Pan-American highway as we began to move more inland
- Our Land Rovers and the start of mountainous scenery on the way to the Nazca lines. It was a rapid transition from plain to mountains!
- Our Land Rovers plus Oscar (IPEN rep) as we took a break
- Away from the coast just barren hills. Very picturesque though
- As we climbed away from the coastal plain the road started winding up steep valleys
- Moving into the hills. Deep valleys with agriculture and barren hillsides
- The landscape as we hit a sort of peneplain after climbing for a while. Not far from the Nazca lines
- Nazca lines - there is some sort of creature? 'drawn' in the centre of the view
- Nazca lines. You can see a very broad area to the left stretching to the centre of the view and lines crossing lower in the view and some short lines in the centre
- Nazca lines - here as well as the straight lines there are shapes drawn out nearer to the camera
- Nazca lines - two parallel lines stretching into the distance across the Pan-Am highway
- Nazca lines - you can see the line just extends into the distance
- Close up of a couple of the Nazca lines showing the way the pebbles were just pushed to the edges to produce the lines.
- Nazca lines . Our Land Rovers parked on the right with the main highway crossing the scene.
- Nazca lines - some straight ahead, broad one going off to the left.
- My first view of a banana flower
- Hotel 'pool' in Nazca, Hotel Zegarra
