August 10th Lima Day 7
A dull and foggy morning. Slight drizzle overnight, which was headline news!
Uisdean and I picked up both Land Rovers at the hotel – me in Short Wheelbase (SWB). Uisdean in the Long Wheelbase (LWB, plus consultant) to go to the Signal office. I managed to get lost in Lima on the way to Signal — and had an interesting time trying to get back onto the right road, while still getting used to driving a LH drive vehicle (so changing gears with the other hand) and coping with the rather erratic traffic…..
Once at the Signal office, we contacted the Land Rover agents about fitting roof racks to both vehicles as we anticipated carrying not just the radiation detector, but also other bits and peices. Then I drove the LWB to the agents without getting lost (roof rack not available for SWB at that time) where there was quite a collection of damaged Land Rovers. Left the LR to have rack fitted amd then took a taxi back to the Signal office. Checked with IPEN (phone) on the status of equipment getting through customs at the airport, and was told unlikely to be available that day. The cargo agents had been told that the shipping address should be to IPEN, which would make customs clearance easier we hoped.
We then spent some time reviewing aerial photos, and I produced a list of equipment requirements to help with the fitting out at of the Land Rovers at IPEN. Uisdean and I took the SWB Land Rover to the Sheraton and then went to the the UK embassy (taxi) late afternoon to meet with the Ambassador (a requirement at the time for us, as ‘representing’ the UK in overseas work) before returning to the Sheraton. At some point I think from the taxi I managed to get a photo of the Lima ‘expressway‘. One of the better roads around Lima at the time.
Spotted policemen having a chat on the crossing in front of the hotel. Took a few photos of our hotel room (which Uisdean & I shared) which was decorated with ‘Peruvian’ style wall hangings in ‘typical’ Peruvian colours note my fashion style of dress in the photo! The 1970’s fashions have a lot to answer for……
I guess we ate at the hotel.
